If you’re having a difficult conversation with someone or are feeling threatened, try smiling.
A smile can positively affect your feelings about a situation. For example, a smile might reduce some of the anxiety or fear you feel, thereby slowing down your heart rate and improving your ability to respond to the situation.
Likewise, smiles can positively influence the responses of the person with whom you are having the dispute. For example, many people find it difficult to quarrel with or be cruel to a person who is smiling. Smiles are disarming, instilling a sense of trust.
Those that are not disarmed by a smile might be so rattled by the unexpected nature of its appearance that they withdraw from or expedite the conversation.
